About the museum
The Catacombs lie outside the walls of the ancient city of Milos and date from the mid-1st to the 7th century AD. They form a complex of spacious chambers, narrow galleries and a family burial chamber, carved into the soft volcanic rock. The total length of the galleries is about 200 metres, the width varies from 1 to 5 metres and the height from 1.6 to 2.5 metres. Arcosolia (arched tombs) and loculi (horizontal tombs) were carved into the walls, and there are pit tombs in the floor. Small niches served for depositing grave goods and lamps.
Very few sections of wall paintings and inscriptions have survived. In the middle of the chamber of Catacomb B stands a single free-standing carved tomb in the shape of a sarcophagus, which was also used as an altar table, as well as the pairs of arcosolia in the chamber of Catacomb A. Recent excavation research has uncovered the southern part of the chambers of both catacombs, with built tombs, a marble sarcophagus, a family tomb and one new chamber.
