About the museum
The Ecclesiastical Museum of Milos has been operating since 2000 in the church of Agia Triada, near the port of Adamas. It was founded on the initiative of Grigoris Belivanakis and is overseen by the Holy Metropolis of Syros, Tinos, Andros, Kea and Milos. In 2006 it became a member of the European Museum Forum.
The church is about a thousand years old and belongs to the rare type of three-aisled basilica with a dome. It was originally built as the monastery of Panagia Theofani, and in 1839 it was bought by refugees from Crete, who made it their parish church.
The collection presents an important part of the island’s artistic heritage: icons and woodcarvings from the Venetian period, offerings by emigrants from Milos to Russia, 14th-century icons and works by the Cretan painters Emmanouil and Antonios Skordilis, who settled on Milos in 1647. Also on display are epitaphs, woodcarved lecterns and iconostases of the 17th century, silver chalices and censers of the 18th century, and gold offerings.
