About the museum
The Milos Mining Museum is in Adamas, the island’s main port. Its aim is to present the geological and mining history of Milos and to honour those who worked to exploit the island’s mineral wealth. It was founded and is run with the support of Imerys Industrial Minerals Greece; the first steps were taken in 1995 and the museum opened to the public on 23 May 1998.
On the ground floor visitors learn about the mining history and activity of Milos through photographs, displays, paintings, geological and topographic maps, and authentic tools and instruments. The upper floor is devoted to the mineral wealth of the island, with mineral samples in display cases and an interactive touch screen. It also houses the Zafeiris Vaos Obsidian Collection, with objects made of obsidian and an important chapter in the prehistoric archaeology of the Aegean. In the basement there is a projection and lecture hall with 40 seats, and a space for educational programmes and temporary exhibitions.
