About the museum
Ancient Olynthus lies east of the present settlement, built on two natural hills that dominate the area, and developed into the most important city of Chalkidiki in the Classical period. From 432 BC, when residents of many coastal settlements moved there, it became the capital of the Chalkidian League and the most important economic and military centre of the region, until its destruction by Philip II in 348 BC.
Thanks to systematic excavation research, a large part of the city has been located. It was built in housing blocks following the Hippodamian urban planning system and had a carefully designed water supply system. The finds have enriched our knowledge of everyday life in the late Classical period in Macedonia.
