About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Polygyros was built to designs by the architect Dimitris Fatouros and first opened in 1971. Originally it had a single 200 m² exhibition hall with representative objects from Chalkidiki, but the large number of important and often unique antiquities uncovered over time led to its expansion.
The new permanent exhibition was inaugurated in July 2022. It presents finds from the prehistoric to the Roman period, coming from the entire regional unit of Chalkidiki as well as from donations and collections, the most important being the Lampropoulos Archaeological Collection.
The exhibition is organised into four thematic sections: Place and History, Prehistoric Societies, Historical Periods, and Collections and Donations. It is enriched by multimedia applications, including an interactive map-timeline of the history of Chalkidiki, interactive applications on the history of research and on written sources, a screen dedicated to the Stagirite philosopher Aristotle, and three-dimensional projection mapping.
