About the museum
The Laografiko Mouseio Afytou was founded in 1980 on the initiative of the visual artist Nikos Paralis and the local folklore association. It is housed in a protected building from 1889 in the centre of the village, on Afytos square, which was donated by the Aletra family. Most of the exhibits come from donations by residents.
In the basement are livestock-farming tools and agricultural tools for ploughing, sowing and harvesting. The first floor recreates a traditional house of Afytos, where wood and stone predominate, with everyday utensils, ceramics, furniture, household items and costumes.
The collection also includes paintings, framed photographs, works of art and shadow-theatre figures from the collection of Evgenios Spatharis. On the ground floor there is a lending library and an exhibition space for the village’s associations.
