About the museum
The Arnaia Textile Museum has operated since 1 November 2010 in a two-storey stone building of 1870, which was a private residence and is known as the Giannoudena house. The municipality renovated the building to house the collection. Arnaia was known for its handmade textiles, mainly rugs and wall hangings; women wove them and the men sold them to monasteries and houses throughout Macedonia.
The material comes mainly from the collection of the weaver Charikleia Dimitrakoudi, one of the last weavers in the area. In the 1990s she had converted the ground floor of her house into a small museum and guided visitors free of charge. In 2009 her children donated the loom and her fabrics to the municipality.
On the ground floor the stages of processing wool are presented, from washing and carding to spinning with distaff and spindle and weaving, together with personal objects of Dimitrakoudi. On the upper floor calligraphic wall hangings, household textiles and garments are displayed, while a reconstructed room of a traditional Arnaian house shows how the fabrics were used in everyday life.
