About the museum
The “city of the Europaioi”, as it is named in an inscription of 108/107 BC, lies only 18 km north-east of Pella, the capital of the Macedonian kingdom. Its position was of strategic importance in the valley of the Axios, which was once navigable, and it controlled the routes between the Aegean and the interior of the Balkans. The city is linked with the eponymous hero of the Macedonians, Europos, son of Makedon and Oreithyia. Settlement in the area goes back to the 5th millennium BC.
The city lies 800 metres south of the present village and was densely built, with houses, workshops and public buildings. It was founded in the early Iron Age and flourished in the 5th and 4th centuries BC, as the finds from its tomb monuments show.
The necropolises lie outside the walls. The visitable archaeological site includes various types of tomb monuments of the Roman and Early Christian periods, such as twin Early Christian domed tombs, a ceramic kiln and a Roman domed tomb. South of the hill of the ancient city, on either side of the ancient road from Pella to Europos, are the tomb monuments of aristocrats of the early Hellenistic period (late 4th – early 3rd century BC).
