About the museum
The Folklore Museum of Goumenissa, also known as the Alevras Folklore Museum, was founded by Christos and Katerina Alevras, who donated their family collection as the core of the exhibition. It is housed in a two-storey building on Dimitriou Kakavou Street and aims to preserve folk tradition and culture and to make younger generations familiar with them.
On the ground floor, festive and everyday men's and women's costumes from all over Macedonia are displayed, among them Sarakatsanian and Thracian costumes, as well as the uniform of a Macedonian Struggle fighter. There are also hand-embroidered silks, woven covers, 19th-century furniture and utensils, documents and personal belongings of Macedonian Struggle fighters, agricultural tools and weaving equipment such as looms, distaffs and spindles. In the basement are barrels for wine and tsipouro and objects of traditional winemaking, as well as local pottery.
