About the museum
The Natural History Museum of Axioupolis is housed in the neoclassical building of the town's former primary school, a short distance from the centre. The idea for it began in 1993. In 1994, when the project was included in the EU community programme LEADER I, restoration of the building began and the first sections of the museum were set up in cooperation with scientific teams from the TEI of Kavala and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
The museum opened to the public in June 1997. Later, through the INTERREG II programme, it was enriched with a fauna collection organised by a team from the TEI of Kavala. It is run by the Axioupolis Culture–Tourism Development Company and emphasises environmental education and raising visitors' awareness of the protection of the natural environment.
The collections cover palaeontology, rocks and mineralogy, flora and fauna, with the aim of presenting the natural environment of the region and of mainland Greece. The museum makes use of new technologies and has developed educational programmes for schools.
