About the museum
The Komboloi Museum was founded in April 1998 in Nafplio by the couple Evangelinos, who have been collecting and studying komboloi since 1958. As it states, it is the only museum of its kind in the world, and its purpose is to preserve and promote the traditional Greek komboloi.
It is housed in a two-storey building from the Ottoman period in the historic centre of the town. On the upper floor is the exhibition, with four small rooms and komboloi from about 1550 to 1950, made of amber, coral, ivory, bone, horn and ebony. Room A presents Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim komboloi, Room B Catholic rosaries and monastery prayer ropes, and Rooms C and D Greek komboloi.
On the ground floor there is a workshop, where old komboloi are restored and copies are made, and a shop selling komboloi and jewellery. The repair of family komboloi is free of charge.
