About the museum
The Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation was founded in 1974 by Ioanna Papantoniou in memory of her father, Vasilis Papantoniou, and today bears his name. The museum of the Foundation, also known as the Ethnological Museum of Nafplion, is housed in the former family residence, a 19th-century neoclassical building in the historic centre of the town, on the corner of Vasileos Alexandrou and Sofroni Streets.
In 1981 the museum was awarded the European Museum of the Year Award, and in 2013 it was honoured by the Academy of Athens. After renovation of the building and its interior it reopened in 2021 with renewed display cases and exhibits.
Since 2006 it has housed the permanent exhibition “Hellenikon Asty: Nafplion 1822–1922” on the urban life of the town. The collections include costumes, prints, textiles, embroideries, paintings and weapons. On the first floor there is a café decorated with works by Phaidon Patrikalakis, while the shop is on the ground floor. The Foundation also has a second museum, the Museum of Childhood, with its own management and its own opening hours.
