About the museum
Ancient Maroneia, a city of the Kikones in Thrace, developed into a powerful city-state with a wall more than 10 kilometres long. According to myth, Odysseus visited it, and the Emperor Hadrian visited it in reality. It flourished in the Hellenistic and Roman times, when its theatre was turned into an arena for beast fights, and in the Byzantine period it was the seat of a bishop.
The ruins of the city cover a large area. The signposted monuments are the theatre, the sanctuary of Dionysus, the propylon and an early Christian basilica, while others lie scattered among olive groves and in the mountain landscape of Ismaros.
