About the museum
The Roma Basketry Museum was founded in Komotini on 18 February 1995 and is located in the settlement of Thrylorio, about nine kilometres from the city. It is an ethnographic and technological museum, unique in its subject in Greece and in Europe.
The original core of the collection consisted of baskets of the Roma from the three national parts of wider Thrace: the Greek, the Bulgarian and the Turkish. Gradually the collection was expanded with objects from other countries of the Balkans and the world, also made by populations that are not Roma. Today it comprises more than 1,000 objects — baskets, panniers, withies, brooms, mats, tools and miniatures — of which about 500 are on display.
Visitors see a panorama of basketry, with baskets by Pomaks, Pontians, Eastern Thracians and Cappadocians, as well as materials, weaving techniques and tools. The museum also functions as an educational centre: it develops educational programmes for primary and secondary school pupils, carries out research and promotes the Romani basket as a traditional and ecological product.
