About the museum
Ancient Zone was a fortress town founded at the end of the 7th century BC by colonists from Samothrace. It controlled sea trade and served the rising elite of the Thracian kingdom with urban services and imported goods. According to tax lists of the 5th century BC, it paid the highest tribute of all the Samothracian colonies to the Athenian League.
The site, 20 km west of Alexandroupoli, was discovered at the beginning of the 20th century, when soldiers were digging trenches on the coast. Visitors see how an ancient Greek city was organised, with walls, temples, private houses and workshops. The city had previously been identified with Mesimvria, a view that has since been revised.
