About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Alexandroupolis is housed in a newly built building on Makris Avenue and presents the history of the Evros region, mainly of its inland hinterland, from prehistoric to Roman times. It opened to the public in 2018 with a temporary exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki on the antiquities of Raidestos, and was officially inaugurated with its permanent exhibition in June 2022.
The tour begins on the coast and proceeds towards the hinterland, ending at the burial mounds of Thrace. From the Toumba of Makri, one of the most important Neolithic settlements of the Balkans, comes an anthropomorphic globular vessel from the second half of the 6th millennium BC, unique in mainland Greece for its size and style. From Plotinopolis, named after Plotina, wife of the emperor Trajan, come colourful fragments of mosaics from the building complexes of the area.
The grave goods from the Thracian tumuli, artificial mounds with a diameter of 15 to 60 metres, hold a special place. The museum displays a small sample of them, from the 4th century BC to the 4th century AD: weapons, jewellery and delicate glass vessels. Short texts, maps, photographs and drawings accompany the exhibits, while video projections and multimedia applications enrich the visit.
