About the museum
The Gaïtis – Simossi Museum is dedicated to the work of the painter Yannis Gaïtis and the sculptor Gavriella Simossi. It was created in cooperation with the Municipality of Ios and Loretta Gaïtis, the sole heir and holder of the copyrights of both artists. Both loved Ios, where Gaïtis built his house and worked until his death in 1984. The building was completed in 2009, the museum company was founded in 2017 and the official opening took place on 14 September 2024.
The 1,600 sq m complex was designed by the architects Loretta Gaïtis and Jacques Charrat. It sits on the top of a hill, with panoramic views of Chora and the harbour of Ios. The permanent collection is displayed in two buildings on either side of an internal path: the Gaïtis building, which extends over two floors, and the Simossi building, where the sculptures, walls and floor are white. The complex is complemented by a temporary exhibition hall, a café and an open-air theatre.
The Gaïtis collection is arranged chronologically: the early periods from 1948 to 1963 are presented on the ground floor, and on the upper floor paintings, installations and constructions around the “little men” from the years 1964–1984. The Simossi works on display include ten monumental sculptures in white resin, created between 1970 and 1983 and enlarged in 1999, plaster sculptures from 1962–1969 and around forty photographic collages from the 1970s.
