Art Gallery of the Society for Macedonian Studies

The first organised art gallery in Thessaloniki, with paintings, sculptures and prints by artists from the city and northern Greece.

Opening hours unknown

About the museum

The gallery was founded in June 1975 as a department of the Society for Macedonian Studies and was the first organised art institution in Thessaloniki. It occupies around 500 square metres on the sixth floor of the Society’s Megaro Theatre (theatre hall), a building designed by the architect Vasileios Kassandras, opposite the White Tower, with views over the Thermaikos Gulf.

In its first period, 1975–1986, it presented works of modern Greek art from the collection of the Morfotiko Idryma (Educational Foundation) of the National Bank. From 1987 to 1995 the exhibition was based on the Society’s collection and the collection of Sotiris Tsoukalis. Since 1995, when the collector withdrew his works, all exhibits have belonged to the Society’s collection.

The permanent collection today numbers around 950 paintings, sculptures and prints, mostly donated by artists. Around 150 works are on display at any one time in three spaces (the corridor, the large hall and the small hall), and they are rotated. The corridor presents a thematic section on Thessaloniki, with classic works from the 19th and early 20th centuries; the large hall contains contemporary works by artists from Thessaloniki and northern Greece; and the small hall hosts small tributes to artists who donated works or are honoured for their contribution. The gallery also organises solo and group temporary exhibitions.
