About the museum
The first basketball museum in the country is located where, in 1919, a basketball was bounced for the first time, when the YMCA of Thessaloniki brought the sport to Greece, spread it and made it known. The museum was founded in 2013 as part of the Interreg programme “Greece – Bulgaria 2007–2013”. In October 2019 it was expanded with a new wing, as part of the PROMO – YMC(H)A project.
The aim of the museum is to highlight the role of the YMCA of Thessaloniki in the development and spread of sports education in Greece, and to let visitors discover the history and the most important moments of the sport in the country. The first exhibition sections consist of historical sports relics of basketball developed at the YMCA and personal items of important figures in the sport.
The new wing is dedicated to the Greek national basketball team and to the history and activities of the major bodies of Greek basketball. Through exhibits such as jerseys of national team players over the years, medals, tickets, balls from historic games signed by the players and commemorative collectibles, the historical course of the sport is portrayed.
