About the museum
The White Tower of Thessaloniki was built in the 15th century, after the Ottoman conquest of the city in 1430, on the site of an older tower of the Byzantine fortifications, where the eastern wall met the sea. Over the centuries it was called the Tower of the Lion, the Tower of Kalamaria and the Tower of the Janissaries, and in the 19th century, when it was used as a prison and place of executions, it became known as the Tower of Blood. In 1883 it was whitewashed on the orders of the sultan, and it has been called the White Tower ever since.
After the sea wall and the eastern wall were demolished in 1911, the tower stood alone on the waterfront and became the symbol of the city. After the liberation in 1912 it had various uses, including as an air-raid shelter and as a meteorology laboratory of Aristotle University. In 1983 it was transferred to the Ministry of Culture.
The tower is circular, 33.90 m high and 21.70 m in diameter, and consists of the ground floor and six upper floors, linked by a spiral staircase of 92 steps. Since 5 September 2008 it has housed the permanent exhibition on Thessaloniki, from its founding in 316/15 BC to the present day.
