About the museum
The Interactive Agricultural Folklore Museum of Varnavas was founded in summer 2002 and belongs to the Varnavas Folklore Society in the municipality of Marathon. It is a multi-theme, multi-function venue; its collection comprises some 5,000 exhibits, and visitors have the rare opportunity to study a significant part of them up close. The museum works with bodies such as the Academy of Athens and the University of Athens, with schools at all levels and, through European programmes, with museums abroad.
Its rooms contain household utensils, local costumes, fabrics, embroidery, oil lamps, measures and weights, scales, a room with a loom, a threshing room and a room with agricultural tools, as well as books from the past. The guided tour lets visitors try out the thematic units in practice, while children get to know the cultural heritage and learn to respect it.
The museum also runs an ethnological collection section, workshops in weaving, embroidery, land cultivation and embroidered bread and traditional food, and a shop selling postcards, printed scarves, fabrics and ceramic replicas, as well as a traditional coffee house serving drinks and local sweets.
