About the museum
The museum is housed in the former primary school of Marathon, which was built around 1908–1910 with a donation from the benefactor Andreas Syngros, extended in 1930–1932 and completed in 1960–1965. In 2004 the building was renovated with sponsorship from Alpha Bank and houses the permanent exhibition, and since 2007 it has operated as a sports museum. The Municipality of Marathon is the operator, and the collection has been donated to it.
The collection exceeds 4,000 exhibits and traces the history of the marathon race from 1896 to the present. The permanent exhibition “Olympic Marathon Runners” comes from a donation by the Olympic Museum in Lausanne and has two sections: the history of the Olympic marathons and the worldwide marathon movement, including the participation of women, Olympic champions and runners’ equipment.
Separate collections are dedicated to Spyridon Louis, winner of the first Olympic marathon in 1896, to Charilaos Vasilakos, to Stelios Kyriakidis, winner of the Boston Marathon in 1946, and to Grigoris Lambrakis, with the peace flag of 1963.
