About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Marathon was inaugurated in 1975 in Vrana and houses finds from the wider area of the Tetrapolis of Marathon. The exhibition is spread over five halls and a covered courtyard.
The visitor follows the history of settlement from the Neolithic period (6th to 4th millennium BC) through the Bronze Age to the historical period. The visitable archaeological sites belonging to the Bronze Age include the large cemetery of the early period at Tsepi and the tumuli cemetery of the middle period at Vrana, next to the museum.
Funeral sculptures of the historical period hold an important place, as do the busts of Herodes Atticus and his pupils from his mansion (2nd century AD), and the life-size statues in Egyptian style from the sanctuary of the Egyptian gods at Mikro Elos (Brexiza) in Nea Makri. Authentic fragments of the marble trophy of the battle of Marathon are also displayed in the museum.
