About the museum
The European Bread Museum was founded in 2005 and presents the fruits of a many-year collecting project. An old mansion in Varnavas was converted into a bread museum and houses more than 3,000 embroidered breads decorated in Greece and in 40 countries abroad. The exhibits form the largest collection of embroidered and religious bread in Europe, and the collection is constantly being enriched.
The museum aims to let visitors, and above all children, get to know the cycle of bread, from sowing and kneading to the table, as well as the countless designs of embroidered bread, which differ from region to region and record a centuries-long tradition. A reconstruction of land cultivation, from sowing to transport, and a reconstruction of the cycle of bread, from preparation and shaping to embroidery and baking, are shown. Visitors are also shown the agricultural tools.
The museum has an exhibition space with replicas of embroidered breads and related literature, a traditional coffee house with coffee and local sweets and, to order, traditional local cuisine. The museum also takes orders for breads and bonbonnières for christenings, engagements and weddings. The embroidered bread of Varnavas is listed in the national inventory of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
