Archaeological Site of Rhamnous

The ancient deme of Rhamnous with the sanctuary of Nemesis and Themis, the walls and the acropolis above the Euboean Gulf.

Opening hoursAdmission €5

About the museum

Rhamnous, perhaps the best-preserved deme of the Athenian city-state, lies in the north-eastern part of Attica, within a forest and with a wonderful view over the Euboean Gulf. It was of strategic importance, because it lay on the border of Athenian territory and controlled the sea passage between Attica and Euboea.

There stood the famous sanctuary of Nemesis, the goddess who punished arrogance, and beside her Themis, goddess of justice, was also worshipped. The sanctuary gained great fame after the Persian Wars, because people believed that it had inspired the Athenian army to fight with such courage at Marathon. According to tradition, the Persians had brought a block of marble to Rhamnous to make a monument to their victory; after their defeat, the statue of Nemesis was carved from the same marble. The statue of Themis, the work of Agorakritos, a pupil of Pheidias, is kept in the National Archaeological Museum.

From the terrace of the sanctuary, with its large and small temples, the view opens over the sea and towards the ancient town on the coastal hill. The walled town enclosed houses and public buildings, while on the acropolis were the military installations; below the steep shore there were two harbours, the eastern and the western. On the road linking the sanctuary with the town, monumental burial enclosures of prominent families of Rhamnous survive.
