About the museum
The Municipal Art Gallery of Thessaloniki was founded in 1961 and officially opened in October 1966. It was first housed in the Municipal Library, from 1986 to 2010 in Villa Mordoch, and since 2013 it has been permanently located in Casa Bianca.
The mansion was built in 1911–1913 to designs by the Italian architect Pietro Arigoni for the industrialist Dino Fernandez Diaz, and it took its name from his wife Blanche (Bianca). In 1990 it passed to the Municipality of Thessaloniki, which undertook its restoration, and in 1998 it was awarded the Europa Nostra prize.
The gallery’s collection comprises about 3,000 works from the last 150 years: paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and photographs. The donation of 627 works by Nikolaos Gyzis stands out; these are on permanent display on the first floor, while works on paper and sculptures are shown in the mezzanine. The semi-basement houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the building.
