About the museum
The Thessaloniki branch of the War Museum was founded in 1993 and has been in operation since 2000. It is housed in the barracks at Pedion tou Areos, in a building designed by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli at the beginning of the 20th century for the Ottoman army.
On the first floor the room “1912, the Liberation of Thessaloniki” is presented, with the original protocol of the city's surrender, as well as “Memories from Modern Greek History”, which covers military history from the late 18th century to 1974, and the section “1940–1941, This Is How We Fought”. On the ground floor the cycle of murals by Polykleitos Regos on Greek history, valour and medals is displayed, as well as weapons and swords from all branches of the Armed Forces. The basement houses the largest collection devoted to the singer Sofia Vembo.
