About the museum
The effort to establish the museum began in 1931 and led to the Folklore Museum of Northern Greece. In 1970 it was renamed the Folklife and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia – Thrace, and it was assigned the building of the Modiano Mansion, also known as the Old Government House.
The mansion was built in 1905–1906 by the architect Eli Modiano, with eclectic elements and influences from Art Nouveau. It was one of the villas of the eastern expansion of Thessaloniki, in the area of Exochi. In 1913 it passed to the Municipality of Thessaloniki and later housed the Governor-General of Macedonia, the Military Medical School and the Seminary. The building is listed and was restored again by 2008, when a new building for temporary exhibitions was added.
The museum’s aim is the research and presentation of the traditional culture of Macedonia and Thrace. Its collections comprise around 20,000 objects of domestic, professional, social and spiritual life.
