About the museum
The Dromokaiteio Museum was founded on 1 November 1995, after 108 years of operation of the hospital, and is considered the first hospital museum in Greece. The idea came from the then chairman of the board, Nikolaos Tsikis. The museum is housed in a space in the building of the hospital’s conference centre and has been renovated, with the material newly arranged in thematic sections.
The exhibits include medical and pharmaceutical material, personal objects of deceased patients and photographs documenting the medical, nursing and occupational therapy work of the hospital. Texts by writers such as Georgios Vizyinos, Michail Mitsakis and Romos Filyras are also displayed, together with unpublished poems by Kostis Palamas and letters of Dimitrios Vikelas, as well as works by painters who were treated at the institution, such as Andreas Krystallis and Aristeidis Lamdas.
