About the museum
The Eikastiko Mouseio tou Glypti Nikola is located on the central square of Agios Georgios Nileias on Pelion. Construction began in 1989 on the second floor of the offices of the former community. Informally the space began operating in 1992, and the museum was officially founded in 1996. Its initiator, designer and financier was the local engraver and sculptor Nikolas Pavlopoulos.
Initially the museum was named “Dimitrio Oikima” after the sculptor’s father, Dimitris. In 2000 it was renamed from a communal to a municipal museum of the sculptor Nikolas. The artist wanted to leave his mark on the cultural life of the area by exhibiting his most representative works. He mainly used wood and marble, and his sculpture was academic in style.
In the building, which has Pelion architecture, 22 sculptures are displayed, most of them in copper or bronze, full-length and large-scale, as well as woodcuts and one copper engraving. Visitors also see personal items of the artist, tools, drawings, engraving plates and handwritten letters. In the courtyard stands a bronze statue of the sculptor himself. The museum space also hosts narrative performances as part of the Pelion Storytelling Festival.
