About the museum
The museum is housed in the Kontos house in Anakasia, a former mansion of the Hatzianastasis family dating from the first half of the 19th century and listed as a historic monument. In 1912 the owner, Giannis Kontos, commissioned the self-taught folk painter Theofilos Hatzimichail to decorate the hall on the second floor.
Theofilos covered about 60 m² of walls with paintings in two zones. In the lower zone he painted flowerpots with flowers, birds, wild animals and hunting scenes. In the upper zone there are 14 large paintings with themes from the Greek Revolution. At the narrow end of the hall he depicted four gods of Olympus, and on the blind wall of the floor he painted a large landscape with Anakasia and, in the background, Makrinitsa and Portaria. The house is the only mansion on Pelion that preserves a complete painted decoration.
