About the museum
The museum is housed in the Topali Mansion in Makrinitsa, a three-storey building from 1844 just below the central square. The Topali family donated the mansion to the community in 1932. The building is a representative example of classic Pelion architecture and has been listed as a protected historic monument since 1985.
The museum has operated since 1994, after restoration work and the organisation of the collections by the Ephorate of Modern Monuments. The folklore collection exceeds 1,500 exhibits: wall paintings of folk art from 18th- and 19th-century mansions, household utensils, equipment for distilling tsipouro, traditional costumes, tools for spinning and weaving, copperplate engravings and small objects of ecclesiastical art. Of particular value are the historical relics of the Revolution of 1878, such as its banner.
