About the museum
The Hellenic Pharmaceutical Museum is housed in the offices of the Thessaloniki Pharmaceutical Association in Foinikas, Kalamaria. It presents pharmacy furniture, prescription books, pharmacy stationery and phials with active pharmaceutical substances, dating from 1900 and even earlier. Visitors are taken back to the era when the pharmacy was an important meeting place for the leading figures of the towns and, besides the preparation of medicines, blood and heart examinations and even X-rays were carried out.
Of particular historical value are the imposing pharmacy furnishings of the museum. They come from the pharmacy “Elafos” of Zafeirios Sfyras in Volos, which had an elaborate crystal display cabinet designed in Paris and made in Vienna in 1889. Also striking is a large composition of oak display cabinets, made in Vienna, 4.90 m high and 6.40 m wide. After many years the pharmacy and its furnishings passed to the pharmacist Dimitrios Panos, whose son Michail donated them to the museum.
The museum welcomes tourists from Greece and abroad, as well as many group visits from schools and vocational training institutes (IEK).
