About the museum
The Entomologiko Mouseio Volou is the result of a many-year private endeavour by the entomologist Dr Athanasios Koutroumpas. It began as a hobby in his school years, with the first documented captures of nocturnal Lepidoptera (moths) in 1958. In 1964, with his enrolment at the Higher School of Agriculture in Athens, the foundations were laid for the scientific recording, classification and study of the collection, while the development of the museum was completed in 1974–1978, when the founder specialised in insect physiology and systematic classification.
The museum has been open to the public since 1987 and is constantly enriched with new species. The collection comprises about 100,000 insects of various orders. The majority of the exhibits are butterflies and moths, belonging to more than 40,000 species, subspecies and tribes. The exhibits come from all continents, were collected by the founder himself on scientific expeditions, and are arranged according to the international rules of systematic entomology.
The museum is housed in its own premises. Besides the general public, entomologists from Greece and abroad visit it for information and species identification.
