About the museum
The Museum of the City of Volos is the first modern city museum in Greece. It is located in Palia and is housed in the former Papantos tobacco warehouse, built around 1920. In the courtyard a section of the eastern side of the wall of the Palia castle survives. Its operation began in December 2014 with the temporary exhibition “Volos–Nea Ionia: so close, so far”, dedicated to the 90 years since the founding of the refugee settlement of Nea Ionia.
The permanent exhibition extends over two floors and is structured in nine sections. In the corridor of the stairwell on each floor a timeline shows the historical development of the town from the establishment of the Ottomans in the Kastro in 1423 to 2014. At the exit is the space for reflection and educational activities. On the ground floor there are spaces for temporary exhibitions and events, a shop and a reading room, while below the temporary exhibition hall sections of Byzantine water channels (6th–7th century) are visible.
