Heptapyrgion and Trigonion Tower

The fortress at the north-eastern end of the walls of Thessaloniki, a former prison and World Heritage monument, together with the Trigonion Tower.

Opening hoursAdmission €10

About the museum

The Heptapyrgion, also known by its Ottoman name Yedi Kule, lies at the north-eastern end of the walls of Thessaloniki. In 1890 it was converted into a penal institution and held prisoners until 1989, when it passed to the responsibility of the Ministry of Culture. Today it is open to visitors and is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Trigonion Tower dominates the upper neighbourhoods of modern Thessaloniki and rivals the battlements of the White Tower in grandeur. It was the last refuge of the Byzantine fortification of the city and, after the Ottoman conquest, was used as an arsenal and an artillery battery.

The White Tower, the Vardar Tower and the central tower of the Heptapyrgion, which belonged to the same defensive network of the city, were built in the same period.
