About the museum
The Nafplio Annex of the National Gallery was inaugurated on 8 May 2004. It is housed in a neoclassical building that the Municipality of Nafplio made available to the National Gallery through the mediation of its then chairman of the board, Apostolos Botsos. The renovation and equipment of the building were funded by the Alexandros S. Onassis Foundation.
The annex houses historic paintings from the collection of the National Gallery relating to the Greek Revolution of 1821–1829. In this way the historic character of Nafplio as the first capital of the newly founded Greek state is given tangible form.
The building also has a room for temporary exhibitions, and the annex offers educational programmes for primary and secondary schools. The permanent display includes works by artists such as Theodoros Vryzakis, Konstantinos Volanakis, Nestor Varveris and Nicolas-Louis-François Gosse.
