About the museum
The Fiskardo Nautical and Environmental Museum was created by the Fiskardo Nautical and Environmental Club, a non-profit organisation, with the help of volunteers from Europe and in cooperation with the Ionian Research Centre. It is housed in the renovated building of the village's former primary school, on an elevated site behind the settlement.
Its aim is to raise public awareness of the marine environment and to encourage protection measures. It presents elements of the island's maritime history, photographs and ship models, as well as information on marine organisms, the Mediterranean monk seal, the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), cetaceans, the island's geology, archaeological finds and marine pollution. In the garden a stone sarcophagus from Roman times, from the Roman cemetery of Fiskardo, is on display. The museum has interactive exhibits and runs activities with schools.
