About the museum
The Laografiko Mouseio Nisyrou is located in Mandraki. It is housed in a two-storey 18th-century mansion, a donation from Kostas and Eleni Sakellaridis, which has been restored by the municipality. The rooms have been arranged to include the rooms of a traditional Nisyrian house, such as the kitchen, the bread oven and the bedroom.
The museum displays works of folk art, mainly useful objects that Nisyrians once used in their everyday work, such as ploughs, sickles, wooden troughs, hand mills and pithoi. Also presented are photographs, mementos of the past, old embroideries and weavings, documents, books, chests and handicrafts. Of particular interest in the bedroom is the so-called “moni”, the traditional bed where the whole family slept, with two storage areas, the pantry (kelari) and the glavani, for clothes, bed linen and other objects.
