About the museum
The Volcanological Museum of Nisyros has been operating since 2010 in the old school of Nikia, on the village square, on the rim of the caldera with a view of the volcano. The Municipality of Nisyros created it in cooperation with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the IGME (Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration) and the Ministry of the Aegean.
The exhibition is divided into thematic sections on the formation and structure of volcanoes, the volcanoes of Greece and the Aegean, the history of Nisyros and the relationship between volcanoes, the environment and people. Visitors use microscopes to observe rocks, view three-dimensional images and computer simulations, and try experimental devices that show children how eruptions happen. The museum also has a library, and nearby is an observatory that continuously monitors the active volcanoes of Greece.
