About the museum
The Tilos Diachronic Archaeological Museum was inaugurated on 27 July 2024 by the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni. The idea for a museum on the island dates back to the 1970s and is linked to the teacher Apostolos Logothetis. The plot in Megalo Chorio was made available in 2014 by the Holy Metropolis of Symi, Tilos, Chalki and Kastellorizo, while the building was designed and erected by the Service for Modern Monuments and Technical Works of the Dodecanese. The project was funded by the South Aegean 2014–2020 Operational Programme, with a budget of about €2.6 million.
The permanent exhibition was designed by the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Dodecanese, which also manages the museum. It presents the history of the island from prehistoric times, with finds from about 4000 BC, to the 17th century, in chronological order and in five sections.
The exhibits include Late Bronze Age cups from the site of Garipa and vessels from Lakkia, an inscription of the 4th century BC from the Asklepieion of Kos with the oath of the Tilians, grave goods, funerary stelae and sculptures, coins and architectural elements from early Christian basilicas. Church vessels and icons donated by the Metropolis are also displayed, together with wall paintings of Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, bones of pygmy elephants and an Ottoman firman, a donation of Nikolaos Kamma.
