About the museum
The Historical Archive – Museum of Hydra was founded in 1918 and housed in a building erected at the expense of the Hydriot shipowner and benefactor Gikas Koulouras. The first steps were taken by the doctor and mayor of Hydra, Antonios Lignos, who sorted and transcribed the documents of the archive of the Community of Hydra (1798–1865), which he had found in a cell of the church of the Dormition of the Theotokos.
In 1972 the original building was demolished for construction reasons, and the present one was built on its site and inaugurated in July 1996. Today it operates as a regional service of the General State Archives and comprises the museum, archive and library departments.
The exhibition space presents important 19th-century paintings, relics of the Greek War of Independence (1821), Hydriot costumes, maps, navigation instruments, cannons, carved ship figureheads, ship models and lithographs of ships. In the historic picture gallery (room XI) the portrait of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis stands out; the silver urn with his embalmed heart is also displayed. The archive holds about 18,000 primary documents, and the library about 15,000 book titles.
