About the museum
On a pine-clad slope west of the harbour of Hydra stands the imposing mansion of Pavlos Kountouriotis, admiral of the Balkan Wars and President of the Hellenic Republic. Kountouriotis inherited it from his grandfather Georgios, a descendant of one of the richest families of Hydra. The building was constructed at the beginning of the 19th century, and in the following decades it underwent extensive repairs without its architecture being altered.
The three-storey house, together with the outbuildings and the tall retaining wall that surrounds the garden, makes full use of the difference in height of the sloping ground. Inside, the wooden ceilings, the black-and-white marble floors and the grand staircase stand out. The museum displays heirlooms of the Kountouriotis family and exhibits from the more recent history of Hydra. The admiral was buried in 1935 on the slope between the sea and the mansion.
