About the museum
The Bouboulina Museum was founded in 1991 in Spetses by Filippos Demertzis-Boumpoulis, a descendant of Laskarina Bouboulina, in an effort to save from collapse the mansion of the heroine, which is more than three centuries old. It operates as a private non-profit body, and its aims are the repair and maintenance of the building, its operation as a museum and cultural centre, and the dissemination of Bouboulina’s history.
Laskarina Bouboulina was born in 1771 in the prisons of Constantinople and grew up in Spetses. She was widowed twice, inherited ships, land and a large fortune, and put them to use in the Greek War of Independence of 1821. On 13 March 1821 she raised her personal revolutionary flag on the mast of her ship “Agamemnon”. She took part in the blockade of Nafplio and Monemvasia and in the siege of Tripolitsa. She was killed in 1825 in a family feud. In 2018 the Greek state conferred on her the title of vice admiral.
Visitors learn about the life of the heroine and see collections of weapons, old books, porcelain, documents and letters, personal objects of Bouboulina, maps, embroideries, Byzantine icons and furniture from the 17th to the 20th century. The Florentine carved wooden ceiling of the large salon stands out; its preservation was one of the main reasons for setting up the museum.
