The History and Folk Museum of Giannitsa

About the museum

The History and Folk Museum of Giannitsa was founded in October 1997 on the initiative of the Historical and Folklore Society “O Filippos”, with the support of the local municipality and private individuals. Its aim is to present local history and folklore. It is housed in a prefabricated building on Plastira Street, in the city centre, near the War Museum.

The first room presents the development of the Giannitsa area from prehistoric times to the Macedonian Struggle (1904–1908) and the Battle of Giannitsa (1912). The next room displays authentic traditional costumes donated by townspeople and friends of the museum. Another room contains a “kalo onta” (main room of a Macedonian house) and another a loom, weaving and embroidery, which complete the picture of the traditional Giannitsa house.

The corridor displays archival photographs, newspapers and printed matter from Giannitsa, as well as the collection of walking sticks made by Kyriakos Papadopoulos.
