Folklore Museum of Edessa

Folklore museum in a two-storey building from 1932 in the Varosi district, with costumes, tools and objects from the everyday life of Edessa.

Opening hoursAdmission €1.50

About the museum

The Folklore Museum of Edessa began on the initiative of the cultural association “Megas Alexandros” and was reorganised on the basis of a folklore and ethnographic study by the University of Thessaloniki. It has been open to the public again since 1998, and today it belongs to the Municipality of Edessa.

It is housed in a two-storey building from 1932 in the Varosi district, a donation from the Sivena family. On the ground floor and both upper floors, the way of life of the town’s residents and of the surrounding area is presented from the mid-19th century to the 1950s: rural life, livestock farming, sericulture, weaving and wax-working, as well as the urban life of industrial Edessa.

The collection includes women’s and men’s costumes from 1880–1920 (Macedonian, Vlach and refugee), objects of the life cycle from birth to death, children’s toys, tools of traditional trades and recreations of everyday scenes. The museum also holds rare church and school books, the oldest being an Old Testament from 1753.
