About the museum
The Yessios Museum was opened on 18 October 2024, the day of the Eleftheria festival of Edessa, and was created by the donor and founder Christos Yessios. It is housed in an Art Deco building of 1936, which the Yessios brothers erected on the site of their father’s heater workshop. Later it served as a hardware and household goods shop, and in 2024 it was donated to the town to house the museum.
The permanent exhibition “The Macedonian Struggle and Edessa” occupies the first two floors and is divided into three sections. On the ground floor the course of Macedonia from 1821 to the First World War is presented; on the mezzanine the armed struggle of 1904–1908; and in the third section the role of Edessa and its residents, the “unsung” fighters.
The visit relies on new technologies and multimedia: projection of the first aerial photograph of Edessa, from 1933, onto the floor, moving old photographs, maps of the refugee settlements after 1922, a digital reconstruction of the battle in the Valtos area and an audio guide. The museum also organises educational programmes, lectures and events.
