About the museum
The Aridaia Museum of Natural History is located at the entrance to the town, next to the Town Hall, in the building of the old railway station. The building was constructed by the Allied forces in the First World War for the line of the “Karatzova train”, which served the transport of troops and supplies. In 2002 it was converted into a museum of natural history and belongs to the Municipality of Almopia.
The exhibition includes fossils of plants and animals from Almopia and other areas. Notable are the fossilised bones of the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) from the caves of Loutra, as well as fossils of trilobites about 500 million years old. In a special area, minerals and rocks of Almopia and of the rest of Greece are presented.
In the botany room there are photographs of plants growing in the area, and another room houses traditional costumes from various parts of Almopia.
