About the museum
The Folk Museum of Kymi was founded in 1981 by the Educational and Cultural Association of Kymi and is considered the largest and most fully organised folklore museum in Euboea. It also functions as a town museum, as it preserves the memory of the era when Kymi flourished thanks to the trade in its famous black wine with the ports of the Black Sea and France.
It is housed in a three-storey neoclassical building from the late 19th century, which belonged to the National Bank of Greece and for years housed its local branch. In 1997 the building passed into the ownership of the Association. The collection numbers about 1,800 objects from the period 1800–1930 and was formed mainly from donations by the town's residents.
The collections cover weaving, embroidery, costumes, metalwork, ceramics, woodcarving, folk painting and stone carving. In the garden there is an open-air circular theatre with 250 seats for summer events, and the museum also has a multi-purpose hall for exhibitions and lectures. An annex is being planned in the village of Pyrgos, in the Chrysanthopoulos mansion.
