About the museum

The Archaeological Museum of Eretria was founded in 1962, and the present form of the permanent exhibition has been operating since 1991. It presents finds from the city of Eretria, the wider area, Amarynthos and Lefkandi.

Sculptures and inscriptions of the 4th century BC are displayed in the vestibule. The first hall contains finds from the prehistoric settlement and cemeteries of Xirokampos, the cemetery of Toumba and prehistoric Eretria, Amarynthos and Magoula. A notable exhibit is the terracotta figurine of a centaur from Lefkandi, one of the oldest depictions of a mythical creature in Greek art. Finds from Geometric Eretria are also shown, from the cemetery of the Heroon at the West Gate, from the sanctuary of Apollo Daphnephoros and from Archaic cemeteries.

In the second hall the western pediment of the Temple of Apollo Daphnephoros (520 BC) dominates, with the composition of Theseus and the Amazon queen Antiope, an outstanding example of Archaic sculpture attributed to the Athenian sculptor Antenor. Coins, objects from Classical and Hellenistic houses, Panathenaic amphorae, finds from local cults and objects from tombs, such as the “Tomb of the Erotes”, are also on display. In the courtyard there are funerary monuments, inscriptions, architectural members, a ceramic kiln and mosaic floors.
